Neodymium-praseodymium oxide prices climbed to nearly $100,000 per tonne in late January, their highest level since 2022. The rally reflects a tightening supply picture shaped by Myanmar disruptions, Chinese export controls, and surging demand from EV motors and wind turbines that has pushed the market into its second consecutive year of deficit.

A Quiet Rally Accelerates

The NdPr oxide market has undergone a significant repricing over the past several months, one that accelerated sharply in the first weeks of January 2026. Prices reached approximately $99,935 per tonne on January 27, their highest level since mid-2022, after climbing steadily from roughly $60,000 per tonne in the middle of last year.

The 3 percent week-over-week gain that characterized late January may appear modest in isolation, but it extends a rally that has added roughly 65 percent to NdPr oxide prices since their 2025 trough. Component pricing tells a similar story: neodymium metal has risen to approximately $204.90 per kilogram (up 37 percent year-to-date and 113 percent year-over-year), while praseodymium oxide reached $109.19 per kilogram in Northeast Asia.

The price movement has been driven by a convergence of supply-side constraints and structural demand growth that analysts increasingly view as durable rather than transient.

Myanmar Supply Disruption

Myanmar accounts for roughly 16 percent of global rare earth production and supplies approximately 60 percent of China's heavy rare earth imports. The country's mining operations are concentrated in Kachin State, where the Kachin Independence Army seized the primary mining hubs of Chipwi and Pangwa in October 2024, prompting China to close its border gates and halt cross-border trade.

Though trade gradually resumed in early 2025 under a negotiated arrangement (including a KIA-imposed levy of 35,000 yuan per metric ton on rare earth concentrates), export volumes through the first nine months of 2025 fell by more than 10,000 tonnes compared to the same period in 2024. The value of Myanmar's rare earth exports dropped to $624 million from nearly $1.4 billion in the peak year of 2023.

While Myanmar's output is more directly tied to heavy rare earths like dysprosium and terbium (critical additives for high-performance NdFeB magnets), the disruption created ripple effects across the broader rare earth complex. Chinese processors who depend on Myanmar feedstock have faced tighter operating conditions, and the uncertainty surrounding continued access to Kachin-sourced material has contributed to a risk premium across rare earth pricing.

Chinese Policy Tightens the Market

China's export control apparatus has added another layer of supply constraint. In April 2025, Beijing imposed restrictions on exports of dysprosium, terbium, and NdFeB magnet materials. Additional curbs on rare earth shipments to Japan followed later in the year, and the broader framework of China's export control regime has created persistent uncertainty about the availability of processed rare earth materials for downstream buyers outside China.

In mid-January 2026, Northern Rare Earth and Baotou Steel announced Q1 concentrate price increases that effectively set a floor under domestic pricing. These anchored price expectations triggered a 14 percent weekly rally that pushed NdPr oxide firmly toward the $100,000 per tonne mark.

China's dominance across the rare earth value chain remains overwhelming. The country controls approximately 90 percent of downstream processing capacity, including separation, metallization, and magnet production. This concentration gives Chinese policy decisions outsized influence on global pricing, and the recent trend toward tighter export controls suggests that this leverage will continue to be exercised strategically.

Structural Demand Growth

The demand picture has strengthened materially. Global NdPr oxide demand is expected to grow 7.7 percent year-over-year in 2026, outpacing supply growth of 7.4 percent and producing a market deficit for the second consecutive year.

Electric vehicles remain the primary demand driver. Each EV traction motor requires roughly one to two kilograms of NdFeB permanent magnets, and with global EV sales forecast to reach 22.9 million units in 2026 (up 6.6 percent year-over-year), the automotive sector alone represents substantial and growing consumption.

Wind power is an increasingly important secondary driver. The shift toward larger offshore turbines, many of which use direct-drive generators containing several hundred kilograms of NdFeB magnets per unit, has amplified demand from the renewable energy sector. Onshore installations continue to grow as well, particularly in China, which accounted for more than half of global wind capacity additions in 2025.

Beyond these headline applications, NdPr demand is growing in robotics, industrial automation, consumer electronics, and defense systems. The permanent magnet market is forecast to grow from roughly $21 billion in 2025 to $30 billion by 2030, reflecting the breadth of applications that depend on high-performance magnetic materials.

Western Supply Chain Responses

The sustained price rally and China's tightening grip on rare earth processing have accelerated Western efforts to build alternative supply chains, though progress remains incremental.

MP Materials opened the first full-scale NdPr magnet manufacturing facility in the United States at Fort Worth, Texas in February 2025. The Pentagon has established a pricing floor of $110 per kilogram for defense procurement under Buy America requirements, providing a guaranteed revenue stream for domestic producers. The Department of Energy has approved $2.8 billion in loan guarantees for rare earth processing projects, with an additional $6.2 billion under review.

In a significant strategic move, MP Materials halted raw material shipments to China in August 2025, redirecting output to its domestic refining operations. The decision contributed to a 40 percent spike in Chinese NdPr prices and underscored how shifts in trade flows can disrupt established pricing dynamics.

European initiatives remain at an earlier stage. The EU Critical Raw Materials Act has set targets for domestic processing capacity, but actual operational facilities are years away from commissioning. Lynas Rare Earths continues to expand its Malaysian processing plant, which remains the only significant non-Chinese rare earth separation facility at scale.

Price Outlook and Risks

Analysts at BMI (Fitch Solutions) project NdPr oxide prices to average $90,000 per tonne through 2026, with Q1 averaging approximately $93,000 and prices moderating slightly to around $87,000 in Q2 as seasonal demand patterns adjust. The consensus view is that prices will remain elevated by historical standards, supported by the structural deficit and ongoing supply-side constraints.

Upside risks include further Chinese export restrictions, a deeper-than-expected Myanmar supply shortfall, or faster-than-anticipated EV adoption in key markets. Any one of these factors could push prices above $100,000 per tonne on a sustained basis.

Downside risks center on demand disappointment, particularly if EV sales growth slows in Europe or North America, and on the potential for Chinese producers to increase output in response to higher prices. China has historically demonstrated the ability to rapidly scale rare earth production when incentives align, and a sustained period above $90,000 per tonne could trigger that response.

For magnet manufacturers, the raw material cost implications are significant. Neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium together account for 60 to 70 percent of NdFeB magnet operating costs, meaning the current pricing environment is compressing margins for downstream producers who lack the ability to pass through cost increases to their customers.

The NdPr market is entering 2026 in a materially different position than it occupied a year ago. The combination of supply constraints, policy-driven uncertainty, and robust demand growth has created conditions that favor sustained price strength, even as the cyclical nature of commodity markets counsels caution about projecting current trends indefinitely.
